The Aegean Sea has been a navigation centre since the 9th millenium, however a lot of its islands, especially the small ones, were inhabited after the neolithic/new stone period/age. Specifically for paros, signs of human life and activity in a prehistoric setlement (5th-4th mllenium BC) were revealed by an archaelogical dig in Saliagis island, which is between Paros and Antiparos. This discovery is the first sign for the habitation of Paros.

Paros took its name from the chief of Arcadian people, Paro.  The Arcadian people arrived on the island as colonists during the geometric period. Then they merged with the Ionian and later Paros developed into a big maritime power through the commerce of the marble of Paros, famous for its clarity. This natural wealth source brought blooming trade especially during the archaic period (7th century BC).Then, lyrical poetry  developed and was represented by the famous lyrical poet Archilochos who comes from the island.

About Naousa


Naoussa is a tradiotional village with the biggest fishing fleet in the Cyclades. It lays on the north coast of the island and has got one of the most picturesque ports with a lot of colorful fishing boats.


The new,comfortable lodgings and the varried nightlife have not changed its traditional character. Here the visitor can find hotels, camping, travel agencies, shops, bars,cafes and restaurants which also serve ouzo. Naoussa is formed from narrow streets, white houses, according to the tradiional style of the Cyclades and beautiful long beaches(such as Piperi, Monastiri, Kolimpithres, Santa Maria, Laggeri).

For those who are interested, Naoussa has remarkable antiquities:ancient settlements (Koukounaries hill),a graveyard built according to the style of the Cyclades (Plastira) and a Venice Castle which is a fort in the north side of the port.

Also, there are six monasteries where the visitor can see icons,murals and original architectural styles.(Loggovarda monastery,Ai-Giannis Detis,Cathedral church of Virgin Mary,Agios Athanasios monastery,medieval church of Agios Georgios).
